<p>Имя талантливого американского писателя, журналиста и лектора Марка Твена известно во всем мире. Уильям Фолкнер говорил, что Марк Твен был «первым по-настоящему американским писателем, и все мы с тех пор — его наследники», а Эрнест Хемингуэй писал, что вся современная американская литература вышла из книги Марка Твена <a href="/sochineniya/priklyucheniya-geklberri-finna">«Приключения Гекльберри Финна»</a>. Из русских писателей о Марке Твене особенно тепло отзывались Максим Горький и Александр Куприн.
<p>Ранние публикации Твена (он начал печататься в 17 лет) интересны в основном как свидетельство хорошего знания грубоватого юмора американской глубинки. В 27 лет он стал профессиональным журналистом, в 34 года опубликовал свою первую книгу. Он оставил более 25 томов произведений самых разных жанров, от легких набросков до толстых исторических романов.
<p>Марк Твен был одновременно юмористом и моралистом. Он написал множество романов о путешествиях и историй о детях. Самым большим вкладом Твена в американскую и мировую литературу считается роман <a href="/sochineniya/priklyucheniya-geklberri-finna">«Приключения Гекльберри Финна»</a>. Также очень популярны <a href="/sochineniya/priklyucheniya-toma-soyera">«Приключения Тома Сойера»</a>, <a href="/sochineniya/princ-i-nischiy">«Принц и нищий»</a>, <a href="/sochineniya/yanki-iz-konnektikuta-pri-dvore-korolya-artura">«Янки из Коннектикута при дворе короля Артура»</a> и сборник автобиографических рассказов <a href="/sochineniya/zhizn-na-missisipi">«Жизнь на Миссисипи»</a>.
<p>Когда-то он сказал: «Можно смешить читателя, но это пустое занятие, если в глубине книги не лежит любовь к людям. Многие не понимают, что от юмориста требуется такая же способность видеть, анализировать, понимать, как и от автора серьезных книг ... Только тот юмор будет жить, что вырастает из правды жизни».
<p>Твен был прекрасным оратором. Многие публичные выступления и лекции были утрачены или не были записаны, отдельные произведения и письма были запрещены к печати самим автором при его жизни и на десятилетия после смерти. Он начинал свою карьеру с непритязательных юморесок, а заканчивал полными тонкой иронии очерками человеческих нравов, остро-сатирическими памфлетами на социально-политическую тематику и философски-глубокими и, при этом, весьма пессимистическими размышлениями о судьбе цивилизации.
<p>Из рассказов, опубликованных в последние годы жизни, наиболее примечателен <a href="/sochineniya/chelovek-kotoriy-sovratil-gedliberg">«Человек, который совратил Гедлиберг»</a>, а также острые, обличительные памфлеты. Произведения последних лет в основном не закончены. Повесть <a href="/sochineniya/tainstvenniy-neznakomec">«Таинственный незнакомец»</a> была опубликована посмертно в 1916 году по незавершенной рукописи. Его последнее, наиболее едкое обличение «проклятого человеческого рода» — <a href="/sochineniya/pisma-s-zemli">«Письма с Земли»</a> — впервые опубликованы дочерью Кларой в 1962 году.
<p>Марк Твен очень гордился общественным признанием: он был обладателем почетной степени магистра искусств (июль 1888 г.), и доктора изящной словесности (октябрь 1901 г.) Йельского университета, почетной степени доктора прав Университета штата Миссури (июнь 1902 г.); особенно он ценил присуждение ему в 1907 г. ученой степени доктора изящной словесности от Оксфордского университета.
<p>Марк Твен родился в год, когда рядом с Землей пролетала комета Галлея. За год до смерти он сказал: «Я пришел в этот мир вместе с кометой Галлея и уйду вместе с ней». Так и случилось..
